According to the latest market research report on optoelectronics, sensors and separated components (o-s-d) released by IC Insights, Japan's Sony has sales of nearly $7.1 billion in 2018, while sharp, the second place, has sales of $3.9 billion. In 2018, the top 10 semiconductor manufacturers in the world still maintain an overall market share of 39%, which is the same as in 2017.
IC Insights' new o-s-d report for 2019 (market analysis and forecast for optoelectronics, sensors/actuators and split semiconductors), which was released at the end of march this year, surveys 30 leading OSD component suppliers and is 350 pages long. The press release released by IC Insights on Wednesday (oct 10) is a key overview of the OSD report.
According to the report, Japanese technology giant SONY is still the largest supplier of CMOS image sensors in Japan. After an excellent sales growth of 19% in 2017, the demand for CMOS image sensors declines due to the rise of the smart phone market. In 2018, SONY's performance is relatively poor, with an increase of only 3%.
Most of the big semiconductor companies listed in the report's top 10 by sales are still dominated by optoelectronics, with six supplying semiconductor sensors, five supplying discrete semiconductors and only four supplying o-s-d semiconductor components.
Japan plant growth slowdown ranked lower
Notably, Japan's strong historical background in optoelectronics and discrete semiconductors continues to keep three of Japan's largest semiconductor manufacturers -- SONY, sharp and Nichia -- in the top 10 o-s-d markets despite the country's continued economic weakness.
Three of the top 10 moved in the rankings compared with 2017, with Switzerland's ST and China's OmniVision moving up, while Japan's Nichia fell.Switzerland's ST(stmicroelectronics) led the way last year, growing 25%.About half of ST's sales growth came from split semiconductors.
Renesas, a Japanese supplier of optoelectronics and discrete semiconductors, dropped out of the top 10 in 2018, dropping from 10th place in 2017 to 12th place in 2018, as o-s-d sales grew just 1 percent last year.
As a major supplier of CMOS image sensors, Howe technology is the only major supplier of new CMOS image sensors in the top 10 in 2018. It ranked 13th in 2017. Its sales have increased by 10% since last year to about 1.6 billion us dollars, and it is still the third largest supplier of CMOS image sensors in the world.
Overall, six of the top 10 o-s-d suppliers saw double-digit percentage sales growth in 2018.The world's top 10 semiconductor vendors accounted for 39 percent of global OSD revenue in 2018.By contrast, the top 10 IC suppliers account for 70 percent of the total IC market share in 2018.
Looking to the future
It is predicted that more large Chinese manufacturers will enter the market of optoelectronics and separated semiconductor in the future, and continue to advance 10 places. However, this could be years away, as future acquisitions and consolidation among large o-s-d suppliers could affect the semiconductor market.
Many semiconductor start-ups in the United States and Asia will continue to grow their presence in MEMS sensor and actuator products.
